digital reduction drawing: precious gem

details

With this drawing, I wanted to apply a charcoal reduction technique that I learned in my community college drawing class to a digital drawing. A reduction is a technique in which the artist fills the page completely with black and then erases it in order to create different values of white and black. As a result, the drawing often comes out more dramatic because the artist is working from dark to light rather than from light to dark. I wanted to try this technique in Photoshop because I normally work differently in Photoshop than I do with physical materials, and I wanted to see if I could bridge my techniques to come up with something different.
