illustrated passage from the last unicorn

details

This was an assignment for my surface research class during my freshman year at VCU. The assignment was to illustrate a passage from a book or other work using colors from nature, so I chose one of my favorite passages from one of my favorite novels: The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. I was going for a children's fairytale version of an illuminated manuscript, which is why I made the colors mostly flat and used gold as the "ink" I used to outline most of the figures, with the exception of the unicorn and the pair in the sky. I was actually really happy with this illustration until my teacher told me it looked like the unicorn was killing Lir rather than giving him a first kiss.
